House and Grounds

The Green is a private, exclusive, five-bedroomed, luxury bed & breakfast hotel in a beautifully restored country house originally built by a wealthy Wiltshire wool merchant.

The 7 acres of peaceful woodland and gardens offer you a relaxing and peaceful stay, whilst being 30 minutes away from a range of world-class attractions such as Stonehenge, Bath and Iford Manor as well as many National Trust houses and gardens. Award-winning dining places such as The Newt and the Longs Arms are in easy reach.  The Green is family-owned and managed and we treat our guests as if they were our personal house guests with an a la carte breakfast, afternoon tea and cake, and a 24-hour bar.

We encourage guests to arrive early and share a cup of tea or a glass of wine on the terrace, take a walk around the garden or play a game of boules, and prepare the following day’s sightseeing, before heading out to a local restaurant.  As locals who have lived all our lives in Wiltshire & Somerset, we are happy to assist you in deciding how to make the most of your visit.

We hope you will enjoy walking through the woodland during your stay. We have a great display of wildflowers:  snowdrops in late winter, wild daffodils in early spring, followed by wood anemones, bluebells and wild garlic in late spring. Then in August we are treated to a carpet of cyclamen flowers along the driveway. We have several specimen trees here, and have labelled around 25 of the more interesting ones. Today we have over 200 different trees and shrubs at The Green, and are continuing to add new plants and trees. Of particular interest are the 150 year-old Giant redwood & the two Persian ironwoods, the largest of which we believe to be taller than the one at Kew gardens. We have left parts of the woods as wild as possible and created local habitats to encourage wildlife (this is why we don’t welcome pet dogs).

We are lucky to have three ponds within the grounds which are a great place to view our local wildlife, we have several species of dragonfly throughout the summer and the odd newt if you are lucky - try a torch at dusk.

We have many 4-legged and winged residents and guests. If you are lucky (and quiet) you can often spot a hare, or occasionally a hedgehog in the long grass or a buzzard sat in a tree and (in the early morning) a roe deer on the lawn. Toads and newts live in and around the ponds. We have many species of birds in the grounds such as robin, wren, goldcrest and long-tailed tit; red kites can often be seen overhead and we have a pair of tawny owls that can be heard on some evenings. We hope you get a chance to glimpse a few of our furry and feathery friends and ask you to please be respectful of the wildlife at all times.

Please note that walking anywhere in the grounds is at your own risk. Please be wary of trip hazards and falling tree branches.

Activities at The Green

We are developing a range of activities to liven up your stay at The Green.

We have laid a tree bark path around the perimeter of the garden for the use of walkers and runners. There is a public footpath to Wingfield and Bradford-on-Avon running past the house and a map of local routes available. Our pétanque piste is on the north lawn. We can also arrange personal fitness coaching  in the garden (weather permitting) with a local trainer, subject to advance notice and availability.  This is suitable for any age from 18 to 80 and any level of fitness, whatever your goals, even if you have never visited a gym before. We have free weights available for use in the garden on request.

For bad weather and cold winter evenings, we have a range of games and jigsaws available in the Drawing Room.  Please feel free to suggest additions (and we might be able to get them during your stay).
