The Green in Wiltshire: A Country House Stay Worth Slowing Down For
We recently welcomed national travel journalist Sarah Baxter for an overnight stay at The Green, giving her the opportunity to experience our 17th-century country house, explore the surrounding Wiltshire countryside and discover the many charms of nearby Bradford-on-Avon.
Writing for The Times, Sarah described The Green as “traditional but not boring” and “classy but not formal”. These words are a wonderful reflection of the atmosphere that we have worked so carefully to create as hosts.
A Memorable Country House Near Bath
From the moment Sarah arrived at our large front door, she felt as though she had stepped into another era. Dating from the 1690s, with Georgian and Victorian additions, The Green, as a Grade II listed house, is filled with history, character and wonderfully individual details.
Yet we never intended for The Green to be a formal country house hotel. The aim has always been for The Green to feel more like a home than a hotel: a relaxed and memorable country house stay where all visitors are welcomed warmly.
Sarah enjoyed that sense of easy, unforced hospitality during her visit, and spent her time exploring the light-filled drawing room, admiring the antiques and original artwork, and discovering some of the stories connected to the house. Many of the furnishings have been restored, reclaimed or found at auction, giving every room its own personality rather than the polished uniformity of a chain hotel.
Beautifully Individual Guest Rooms
Sarah stayed in Redwood, our deep forest-green room named after the magnificent sequoia visible from its window seats and freestanding bath. She was particularly taken with its Georgian sleigh bed, natural bedding and peaceful outlook across the grounds.
Each of The Green’s five individually designed guest rooms has its own distinctive character. Carefully chosen antiques, original features, rich colours and thoughtful decorative touches create interiors that feel elegant, timeless and comfortable.
Seven Acres To Savour
The following morning, Sarah walked through The Green’s seven acres of private gardens and woodland. Her route took her past some of the estate’s 200 trees, the pond, Victorian greenhouse and kitchen garden, with an appearance from one of the resident hares adding to the sense of rural escape.
Breakfast was another highlight for Sarah, who enjoyed homemade granola followed by a cooked breakfast prepared using excellent local ingredients, including sausages from the nearby Flourish Farm Shop.
Breakfast is an extremely important part of every stay at The Green, with all dishes shaped by Aurelius’s lifelong passion for food, drink and hospitality. We invite our guests to linger at the table, enjoy the view and begin the day at an altogether gentler pace.
Explore Bradford-on-Avon, Bath and Beyond
Sarah also used her visit to explore nearby Bradford-on-Avon, highlighting its historic bridge, Saxon church, medieval Tithe Barn and independent shops. She ventured farther afield to discover Iford Manor, Westwood Manor and the beautiful countryside surrounding the town too.
Tithe Barn, Bradford on Avon
The Green is perfectly positioned for exploring the heart of Wiltshire while remaining just a few miles from Bath. Guests can enjoy historic houses, beautiful gardens, country walks and excellent local pubs before returning to the peace of the house.
Royal Crescent, Bath
With so much nearby, The Green rewards a longer stay. Two or more nights provide the freedom to discover the area without rushing, while still leaving time to relax with a good book, wander through the woodland or enjoy a drink on the terrace.
Sarah concluded in her review for The Times that “The Green is a triumph.” It was wonderful to receive such recognition.
